  • [WORKAROUND] Error updating 11.0.504 to 11.768 --> MS .NET Framework Required

Any ZA user(s) finding it necessary to have Microsoft .NET Framework installed or being installed by ZA AV+FW 11.768?

It appears ZA AV+FW 11.768 requires the installation of Microsoft .NET. True?
    • When installing over 11.0.504 I received an error and the installation failed. I tried to post a png image, but was told it was not valid??? I had downloaded the installation file yesterday from http://server.iad.liveperson.net/hc/...10&action=view
    • I could not get my computer to reboot, even in Safe Mode. Really upset me. On about the third attempt, computer did reboot in Safe Mode and I was able to restore to a Restore Point from earlier this morning. The new version ZA 11.768 showed as installed. I uninstalled using Revo, rebooted, ran clean.exe, cleaned up registry and hard drive, then installed ZA 11.0.504 and everything appears back as it was.

With ZA 11.0.504 installed, I can update, but I am not seeing the latest DAT file version as indicated in https://www.zonealarm.com/forums/sho...ista-Win7-Win8.
    • I have run update several times
    • My current DAT file version is shown below

Windows XP SP3 (fully up to date)
    Desktop
ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall version: 11.0.000.504
    Vsmon version: 11.0.000.504
    Driver version: 11.0.000.504
    Antivirus engine version: 8.3.0.18
Antivirus signature DAT file version: 1114142848
    Web Identity Protections version: 1.5.393.22

Thank you for all your contributions, the origin of the problem has been identified (MS .NET Framework required).

Taking into consideration that the OP will move to other solutions not requiring MS .NET Framework and that all relevant information has been given I will be revising the title of the thread to hint to the workaround and closing it.

I wish the user good luck for his/her new software solution choosen. There is indeed plenty of free software out there depending on users needs and wishes. That's the beauty of free software!

    Thank you.

I was wrong. .NET 3.5 is required to be installed. The new Site Check feature requires it. This is new in version 11.0768.000

So when its not detected we will attempt to download and install it.

In your case since the .NET installer we download from Microsoft is crashing when it runs (not a ZoneAlarm crash ) I would suggest you run the windows update utility and just update EVERYTHING. Don't leave anything out there is no reason to do that at all. Install all critical , non-critical and all other updates of ANY type.

Yes installing all versions of .net and all the patches for .net can take a Long Long time, but to avoid issues in the futures it better to bit the bullet now.

After you done that then install ZA again. ZA will not need to download and install .Net again.

Just trying to get a full understanding.

How can a "bad upgrade" result in the ZA installer attempting to download and install .NET Framework? The image below was posted above. It shows the download/install attempt of .NET Framework on the ZA installer panel:

If .NET was required ZA installer would detect if it was not present on your PC an message would have been display telling you it was required and the installation would stop.

    But .NET is NOT required.

Sounds like a bad upgrade as fax has suggested and that's all.

And I do hope that the developers will reinstate the option to exclude installation of the toolbar at install time.

Thank you for your Feedback on your experience with the Free Firewall + antivirus update..

Here is additional information posted at the top of the Free Firewall section from the Forum Moderator.

The software is provided for Free. A lot of very expensive dollars go into developing Free security software.

So in exchange for Free software we Require the changing of the Browsers homepage and browser search provider along with a Toolbar. Doing this provides a small amount of revenue to us.

Were not getting rich off this nor does it pay for all development of Free versions but it helps so that we can continue to offer Free firewall and AV solutions to the public.

Thanks for the reply. You can now see what I experienced.

With a verified installer and the fact the ZA downloaded and tried to install .NET Framework. My only suspicion is that it has something to do with "New: Forcefield removed, replaced with new and improved Site Check technology and security toolbar", my thinking is that it is likely changes to the toolbar for compatibility from version to version of some browsers. And I do hope that the developers will reinstate the option to exclude installation of the toolbar at install time.

As I previously stated, I had difficulty rebooting my system, the OS would not load, and could not boot into Safe Mode until several attempts were made.

With my serious health conditions, I do not need that "jolt" again this soon. I will stay with ZA AV+FW 11.0.504 for now. I sincerely hope that an answer can be found so that I may continue using ZA rather than having to adapt to and learn another product.

Ok, thanks but first time I see this error... so cannot really help, sorry. Searching the forum for similar cases did not help either. So, you seem alone with this problem, so far.

Not clear if you get it everytime you try to install ZA or this is still the screenshot from the first time you tried to install ZA.

If you have tried only once then you should try again with a fresh booted PC, no ZA installed and no third party software running.
If the issue instead is that you do not like to have NET installed (or part of it) then I am afraid you need to give up on ZAfree and move to a solution that do not use it. Not good to stick to old version of ZA anyway.

Sorry, no other solutions to suggest to resolve your problem.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,
    Fax

The main point of my photobucket post above is on the "Error" image.

The ZA AV+FW 11.768 installer was downloading and installing .NET Framework.

Since I could not get my png images to upload to the ZA forum, I established an account at photobucket. Perhaps there is information on them that was not properly conveyed in my verbal descriptions above. Following are 2 images: the error at installation of ZA AV+FW 11.768 trying to download/install .NET Framework on the ZA 11.768 installation panel/screen and the hash totals for the installer to verify that the file is not corrupt:

I can only add one simple fact. System/software requirements have not changed from version 504 to 768. So, if you had 504 working fine there is not reason to beleive you can have 768 working perfectly fine as well. So, just too much of speculation so far for an issue that, IMO, is likely a coincidence or a quirk of the day

    Sky Soldiers:

I had composed and tried to submit a much more detailed answer but was apparently timed-out by the forum software, was taken to the login page and lost the entire effort. Not going to try to reconstruct.

You obviously have .NET Framework 3.51 and 4.0 installed on your system. I do not. Your reply concerning updates to those items on 06/11/2013 has "disappeared". From the e-mail that I received:
    • I checked my installed Windows Updates. The following were installed on 06/11/2013.
    • MS .Net Framework 3.5.1 & MS .Net Framework 4 for Win 7x64 based System (Recommended)

I do not have or want .NET Framework on my system. If I could get the png image to post you would clearly see that .NET Framework was on the ZA AV+FW 11.768 installation panel/screen when the failure occurred.

No Microsoft Update was taking place at the time. I manually go to the Microsoft Update site and download all updates in the first category. .NET Framework is in the 2nd category, but updates thereto will be included in auto updates if you have it installed on your system. The only item in the 2nd category that I look for and update are certificate updates.

By the way, this keycaptcha image thing is a pain and very slow to respond from keycaptcha once the image is assembled. Don't like it at all.

Maybe this was the cause of your issue.

    From ZoneAlarm Readme :

    General:

    a. Installing ZoneAlarm while a Windows update is running may lead to a failed installation. Allow the Windows update to finish, restart, and then try your installation again.
